Oil Painting Flat Creek in Summer

Flat Creek in Summer
There is a place in the slow riffle here where I know an enormous fine spotted cutthroat resides.  I have seen it rising to dry flies, and I have seen it thwart countless average fishermen.  The quiet movement of a small spring fed river like Flat Creek moving through the National Elk Refuge in summer breeds trout legendary in size and education.  In August, when it opens to fishing, the grasses and undergrowth have already begun to change, producing a riot of color, favorites of my palette.  In morning, the mist burns off and offers a little atmosphere before clarity of early day.  Such a time leaves the trout in peace but for the occasional family of Trumpeter Swans floating past.
